Fire rated Doors Downtown Toronto

As previously indicated, doors are branded according to how long (in hours or minutes) they are anticipated to offer protection. A letter-rating that correlates to the time-based ratings may be seen on certain extremely ancient doors. We have included the letters in our chart below for reference, but current projects should utilize time-based ratings.

“Limited to the maximum area tested.”

Additionally, doors may have a temperature rise rating in degrees. This displays the anticipated surface temperature on the door’s inside after 30 minutes of exposure to fire. This will be labelled as being 250°, 450°, or 650°. Any glass that is a part of the door must also meet the standards for temperature increase.

S-Label or “Smoke Rating”

S-Labels are required by several regulations for specific doors in particular occupancies. For instance, smoke protection is frequently needed for corridor doors to stop smoke from entering or escaping from an occupied location.

A “smoke rating” is not exactly what an S-label is. The S-label instead certifies that the door passes the air leakage testing required by UL 1784: Standard for Air Leakage Tests of Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives. But if air cannot seep through the door assembly, smoke cannot travel through. Installing UL-certified gasketing is typically how an S-label is obtained.

Required Door Ratings Based on Partition Rating

Based on the rating of the barrier or partition that the door is in, the required door rating is determined. The building code should be consulted owing to the difficulty in calculating the rating of the partition and the permitted kind of opening; however, the table below offers an overview.
